The old town is built into the side of San Bruno Mountain on narrow lots and narrow streets, with a great many houses from the 1920s through the 1940s sitting on hillside foundations. That geography is the main practical factor in the work: access for roof-level repairs takes planning, and equipment often has to come up a flight of steps rather than off the back of the truck. The exposure on the upper streets is severe, with wind coming over the ridge and hitting stacks that stand well clear of anything sheltering them. Set up and seal
Drop cloths over the hearth and floor, and the fireplace opening sealed so nothing escapes into the room.
Sweep the full run
Rotary and hand brushes from the firebox through the smoke chamber, throat and flue to the cap, sized to your flue.
Vacuum under negative pressure
A HEPA vacuum runs the whole time so the soot goes into the machine rather than onto your furniture.
Inspect what the brush exposed
Camera and visual check of the liner, damper, smoke shelf and crown now that the surfaces are clean.

Access to my Brisbane house is difficult. Is that a problem?
It is normal here and we plan for it. Steep lots, stairs and narrow streets are the standard Brisbane condition, and we would rather look at access when we quote than discover it on the morning of the work.
My fire smokes when the wind is up. What fixes that?
On the exposed Brisbane streets that is nearly always downdraught rather than a blockage. A correctly specified anti-downdraught cap solves the majority of them, and it is a great deal cheaper than the structural work people often expect.
How often should the chimney be swept?
Once a year for anything you burn regularly, and the industry standard is an annual inspection regardless of use. If you burn most evenings through the winter, or you burn wood that was not fully seasoned, it is worth doing before every heating season.
How long does a sweep take?
A straightforward single fireplace usually runs about an hour to ninety minutes. Heavy glazed creosote, a blocked flue or a second fireplace adds time, and we will tell you before we start rather than after.
