How we do it
Inspect from the roof
The crown, cap, flashing and top courses assessed directly rather than from the ground.
Repair or replace
Small cracks sealed with a flexible crown coating. A failed crown is cut out and recast with a proper overhang and drip edge.
Fit the right cap
Stainless or copper, sized to the flue, with a spark arrestor and mesh where appropriate.
Check the flashing
The other common entry point, checked and quoted at the same time so the roof only gets opened once.

What does a chimney crown actually do?
It is the sloped concrete lid on top of the stack. It sheds rain away from the masonry and the flue, and should overhang the brickwork with a drip edge so water falls clear rather than running down the face.
Do I really need a cap?
Yes. Without one, rain goes straight down the flue onto the damper and the smoke shelf, and birds nest in the warm opening. A cap is the cheapest component on the chimney and prevents two of the most common problems.
Can a cracked crown be sealed, or does it need replacing?
Hairline cracks can be sealed with a flexible crown coating that flexes with the masonry. A crown that is spalling, missing sections, or has no overhang needs recasting, because sealing a failed crown just hides it for a season.
