Vallejo has the oldest housing stock of anywhere we serve. The Heritage District and the streets around downtown hold a substantial concentration of genuine Victorians from the 1870s onward, built when the naval shipyard at Mare Island was the center of the local economy, and many of those houses still have their original masonry chimneys. At that age the flues are unlined as a matter of course, the mortar is soft lime rather than cement, and the stacks are tall and slender in the style of the period. They need repair techniques suited to nineteenth century masonry, not modern ones. The city also sits where the delta winds come through, which puts sustained lateral load on tall, slender, century-and-a-half-old stacks that were not built with that in mind.
